The game utilizes a lighting system which affects the sanity of a character (darkness being detrimental to Daniel's sanity). However sanity cannot explicitly lead to killing the player, unlike physical health. The sanity system can be considered similar to the one found in Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Sanity stops draining when in lit areas, and it regenerates to a healthy state if Daniel solves a puzzle. Dips in Daniel's sanity allow the supernatural to spot him quickly. Seeing and being involved in disturbing events in the game will drain his sanity, eventually leaving him with hallucinations and impaired movement and vision.
